Rebecca Wong

(she/her)

Rebecca was born and raised on the unceded Algonquin Territory of Ottawa, Ontario. She moved to the lands of the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, specifically of the Songhees and Xʷsepsəm Nations, in 2022 for the JD/JID (joint Common Law & Indigenous Legal Orders) program at the University of Victoria. Her parents immigrated to Turtle Island from Malaysia; her father is Hakka and her mother is Bidayuh, an Indigenous people of the island of Borneo. She is passionate about Indigenous rights and self-determination. She currently works at Beresford Law Professional Corporation supporting her principal lawyer in drafting laws for First Nations governments and supporting self-government agreement negotiations. She previously worked in the federal government of Canada for over 8 years in various bilingual capacities, including as a Parliamentary Affairs Officer, Assistant Negotiator and Policy Analyst. She completed her Masters degree in Migration Studies in 2019 at the University of Oxford. Her Master’s dissertation explored the relationship between Indigenous communities and racialized newcomers on Turtle Island. She previously completed her undergraduate degree in 2018 from the University of Ottawa in Conflict Studies and Human Rights with a minor in Indigenous Studies (French Immersion). In addition to serving on the Board of Mediate BC, she serves on the Board of the Directors (as Secretary) of two other organizations: Indigenous Youth Roots (a national Indigenous Youth-led organization) and Luther Court Society (a community of care offering end of life and assisted living services to older adults).
