Conflict Coaching

What is Conflict Coaching?

Conflict Coaching is a form of support for individuals or teams working through a specific conflict or learning conflict resolution skills. Much like other forms of coaching, a coach may work with you (or your team) on specific goals like developing conflict resolution skills, preparing for difficult conversations, identifying issues to address and inviting collaborative discussions.

When is Conflict Coaching helpful?

A Conflict Coach can assist at any stage in a conflict. Coaches can offer assistance with single questions or can offer guidance through an extended conflict resolution process.

Some common scenarios where conflict coaches are engaged include:

  • Advice and coaching on raising issues with a family member, co-worker, neighbour, or in other circumstances where concerns are emerging
  • Preparing for difficult conversations, negotiations, and other communications
  • Feedback on written communications
  • Support for a team seeking to resolve an internal conflict on their own but needing help structuring a process that works for everyone
  • Guidance for a team leader who is trying to assist team members who have a dispute
  • Individual or team coaching in conflict resolution skills to improve leadership or teamwork skills
  • Coaching for individuals entering a mediation or other conflict resolution process who may want assistance with preparation, planning, etc.

What types of conflicts can a Conflict Coach help with?

Conflict Coaching is most often used in workplace, family and housing conflicts, but it can be helpful in any circumstance where people hope to maintain relationships or approach conflicts collaboratively.

In a workplace, a conflict coach might help a team leader or team members meet their professional development goals. Often a conflict coach is involved in team building or restoring relationships when a conflict has disrupted a team.

In the family context, Divorce Coaches are a common support in collaborative divorce or separation processes.

Strata councils, property managers, tenants and even neighbours may draw on conflict coaches for help with housing conflicts. These conflicts can vary greatly in scope but share a need for resolution in order to attain a peaceful living situation.

How do I find a coach?

Many of our mediators also offer conflict coaching services. Search for “conflict coach” on our Find A Professional page.

Sign up for one of our Ask a Mediator sessions. Ask a Mediator is not a coaching service, but it provides an opportunity to meet with a mediator for 30 minutes to discuss collaborative approaches to a conflict. This might include a discussion of when conflict coaching is most useful in specific circumstances.

If you are looking for someone to help in a separation/divorce, also have a look at Divorce Coach info from BC Collaborative Roster Society or Collaborative Divorce BC.
